Oh! The Places You’ll Go! (Burning Man)
One of my favorite books of all time, read and acted aloud by people I hope to meet in a place I hope to be.
Custom Beer Tap, a collaboration with TJ McKillop (who shaped and finished the handle) for his brother’s Christmas present.
Plasma CNCs are too much fun.

Prompt: 2012 Ticket
Here’s a snapshot of what my travel plans for 2012 looked like on November 1, the day I started BootnAll’s 30 Days challenge:
And in thirty days’ time, my plans have definitely evolved.

Prompt: One Word
What does travel mean to you in one word?
I realize that the word I chose was already a prompt for the month-long project, but lately I’ve been toying with contrast between lust and love and decided to bring this concept back around.
I think the type treatment speaks for itself :)

Prompt: Gear
The right gear can make or break your trip. What is your favorite/must-have gear item?
Answer: Backpacker’s Hammock and two 10-ft. segments of rope!
I’ve posted this same picture on an earlier post on this site, but still found it entirely appropriate for this prompt, as it consistently tops my list of essentials when traveling. I’ve used it for camping trips, long road hauls, overseas journeys, airports, and catching a quick nap at Disneyland during Grad Night (I was a chaperone, and yes, they caught me and made me take it down. Mickey P.D. is hardcore, man.).
You can’t go wrong with a backpacker’s hammock. Even if you never use it, it takes up about the same amount of space as a can of soda.
And let’s be honest: if you’re really serious about backpacking, you’ll be packing rope anyways…you might as well throw in another excuse to use it.

Day 27 Prompt: Wanderlust
Share a photo or video that just makes you want to GO. RIGHT. NOW
Having grown up in one of the coldest regions in the world, a 1500km motorcycle trek through Siberia sounds like something I should’ve done a long time ago…who’s with me for the 2013 Ice Race?

Prompt: Photo
Post a photo of your favorite place and tell us what you love about it.
I was quietly, slowly humbled as I trekked the wooden platforms around Plitvicka Jezera National Park, where the waterfalls between the lakes eroded—like the limestone they cut through—my urge to hurry north, towards Zagreb, towards rest and a place to sleep.
We remained in the park as long as daylight would allow, but when the sun set we still did not have a place to stay for the night, and we had missed the last bus by hours. There were seven of us. After a short trek to the nearby village, Ana spoke with a woman out on her evening walk, and in thirty minutes’ time we arrived at our new apartment and crashed across beds, couches, cots, and floor mats covered by chair pads.
We slept like children.

Prompt: Family
Family shapes who we are, but sometimes the family we create plays a bigger role in our lives than the one we were born into. Tell a story about how either of your “families” have impacted your life and your travels.
I belong to a far-flung family, both immediate and extended. If I only counted out to my second-cousins, we still cover Alaska, Washington, California, Nevada, Texas, Colorado, Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New York. If we ever want to see each other, travel is a given, and we converge from all corners once every three years for family reunions that take just as long to recover from.

Seeing what others have – and don’t have – around the world often helps us appreciate our own good fortune. What are you thankful for this year ?
Prompt: Giving Thanks
Our house was skunked a few days ago, and traces of the putrid smell still linger—but I slept last night comfortable and warm. There was a mountain of dishes desperately needing a wash, and since cleaning dinnerware is strangely therapeutic for me, I set about the task quietly content. Now I’m sitting with a cup of coffee Josh brewed as Taylor croons over his guitar, strumming on in the orange light of morning.
